The need for policy and institutional support to develop an integrated seed system that really serves African smallholders is explained. Mekelle University (MU) is the key implementing partner for the Integrated Seed Sector Development (ISSD) programme in the Tigray region, Ethiopia, where farmers rely heavily on the traditional seed system. MU works with farmers, consumers, other public institutions and private companies to develop interventions using seeds of local crops as opposed to the varieties (e.g. hybrid maize) that are favoured by commercial enterprises involved in the formal seed sector.
(CCM, MU, Dec. 02, 2013) Mekelle University was one of the participants in the city track long distance running conducted on Nov. 28, 2013 in celebrating the 26th World Aids Day. The city track long distance running was organized by the Tigray Athletics Federation in collaboration with CDC Ethiopia.
(CCM, MU, Dec. 02, 2013) Mekelle University and Radio Dimtsi Weyane Tigray signed a memorandum of understanding on Nov. 25, 2013 to bring about promising impacts at all levels of human development and intended behavioral change focusing on capacity building, joint research, community awareness and others.
(CCM, MU, Nov. 25, 2013) Dr. Ephrem Tekle is appointed as a Director of the Academic Programs Directorate Office on 13 Nov. 2013. The Academic Programs Directorate is one of the two newly established directorate offices under the office of the Vice President for Academics (AVP) with a view to enable the office discharge its mandates effectively and heighten its efforts of bringing about the transformation of the university. The second directorate office is the Continuing and Distance Education Directorate. Both directorate offices report to the AVP and are supposed to work in collaboration with other institutions in the university.
(CCM, MU, Nov. 23, 2013) Dr. Abdulkadir Kedir is appointed as an Academic Vice President of Mekelle University. On a letter issued on Hidar 8, 2006 E.c by the Board Chairperson of Mekelle University, His Excellency Ato Tedros Hagos, Dr. Abdulkadir Kedir is asked to effectively challenge the task of an Academic Vice President.
Dr. Abdelkadir Kedir was serving as a Vice President for Research and Community Services of Mekelle University for the last five years. A vacancy announcement is now posted for the position of Vice President for Research and Community Services and the President is looking for competent individuals.
Wheat, Barley and Rice thresher machine which was adapted by Mekelle University Department of Industrial engineering was taken to Gebru Hagos integrated farm for demonstration purpose and found to be effective.
