Vision

The MPH Program in Nutrition at Mekelle University envisions a program that provides students with the knowledge and skills to improve the nutritional health of individuals, households, and communities in Ethiopia by addressing the social and environmental causes of nutrition problems.

Mission Statement

The mission of the MPH program in nutrition at Mekelle University is to train public health professionals to have the knowledge and skills to foster health promotion/disease prevention, to manage or participate in programs and/or shape policies that improve the health of populations by improving their nutrition.

Program competencies

Students will acquire the core public health competencies through successful completion of the program core courses. With the guidance from an advisor, students will be well-versed in planning and evaluating community nutrition programs, have the knowledge and skills required for community-based nutrition programs, obtain hands-on experience in public health nutrition by completing a community-based practicum and disseminating research results by producing and defending a research thesis.

Objectives:

The objectives of the MPH in Nutrition program will be:

To produce public health professionals able to plan, design, implement and evaluate nutrition intervention programs

To produce graduates able to advice policy makers and shape policies that improve the health of populations by improving their nutrition.

To produce specialists trained to deal with nutrition counseling at various levels to bring desired behavior changes

To enhance and strengthen the country’s operational research capacity on various nutritional problems

To increase and transform the quality of nutrition research undertaken by the academia

To strengthen local, regional as well as international collaborations in nutrition training and research
