Invitation to participate on the 1st national Workshop on Prospects of Wildlife Conservation and Ecotourism for Sustainable Development

Ethiopia is endowed with diverse ecosystems in which diverse flora and fauna are found in varies protected areas. Protected areas are biodiversity conservation centers and major tourism assets for a nation, particularly for developing countries like Ethiopia through providing sustainable benefit to the local community while supporting for the maintenance and rehabilitation of the protected areas themselves. Many protected area such as National Parks, wildlife sanctuaries, wildlife reserves, controlled hunting areas and water bodies are not fully protected hence there is incomplete law implementation in protecting illegal poaching and forest resources harvesting from the protected areas. These diverse wildlife resources in protected areas of Ethiopia should gain attention from government and changed in to economic benefits to local communities in particular and for the national GDP in general through ecotourism activities and sustainable management. The main objective of the workshop is expected to entail basics of opportunities and challenges of wildlife conservation and ecotourism development with particular reference to the trends in wildlife policy and laws and wildlife conservation of the country.

Mekelle University is delighted to invite you to the first-ever national workshop on Prospects of Wildlife Conservation and Ecotourism for Sustainable Development through scientific research and stakeholder participations in Wildlife and Ecotourism Sciences to be held on May 13, 2017 at Mekelle University, Ethiopia. The workshop is therefore considered to tackle ever changing wildlife habitat and climate change, and thereby is ready to enhancement of the country via ecotourism industry. As key stakeholders in the conservation of natural and cultural resources of the country, your experiences, suggestions and encouragements will reveal paramount importance outcomes and discussions on this workshop. We are highly pleased looking forward to hearing from you and hope that you would be wholly interested to accept our invitation letter to this special event in the history of Mekelle University.

Hence, the specific objectives of the workshop are

  • To recognize the opportunities of wildlife and ecotourism potential in Ethiopia

  • To point out the Challenges of wildlife and Ecotourism management in Ethiopia

  • To set up firm attachment among the WEtM program and stakeholders

  • To share experience from different sectors as input for wildlife conservation and promote ecotourism

  • To document the result from the workshop and disseminate for all Ethiopian tourism bureau for planning and implementation
