The College of Business and Economics (CBE hereafter) is one of the pioneer colleges   of the Mekelle University.  To briefly describe CBE in perspective, CBE is the brainchild of the School of Economics. The School of Economics was established in 1987 in the librated area of Tigray during the struggle with the military regime. Following the downfall of the military junta in 1991, the school of economics was upgraded to the college level wherein the then school of economics was named by Mekelle Business College. Then, the college started its operation by enrolling 150 students in its different diploma programs with 16 academic and 20 support staff members.
Currently, CBE is one of the biggest colleges in the university with five academic departments offering 7 undergraduate and 9 postgraduate programs; having more than 150 academic and 50 support staff members and 4000 students that are enrolled in the regular and extension schemes. Since its inception, CBE has been exerting its utmost efforts to produce qualified and competent graduates in the field of business and economics. To meet the demand for high level of education, CBE is enhancing its outreach by opening undergraduate and postgraduate programs in the regular, evening and summer programs.  It has already opened a center in Addis Ababa and is running four postgraduate programs therein. It has also planned to expand its outreach to neighboring countries and open Doctoral Programs in the areas of business and economics.
In addition to its teaching mandate, CBE, in collaboration with its domestic and international partners, has been engaged in various research activities that support the ongoing development endeavors in the country. CBE has inculcated the culture of working together with governmental, non-governmental as well as business organizations in terms of capacity development, research, and community services.  The college aspires to create strong linkage with and work in collaboration with different national and international organizations.
