1 Representatives of the college of health sciences, Ayder Hospital have discussed about the Fremnatos charity organization in Mekelle. The staff has discussed in detail and decide to contribute their role especially, in the health profession and even financially. They said it is one of the community services of the university. Delegates from the university and from the College of health sciences have been visited the charity organization in practice and  

The Fremnatos Charity Organization is established in April 2018 by the two religious leaders, Aba G/Medhin Berhe and Aba Samuel Asgedom to help elders, mentality disabled and children people. Currently, the organization is helping about 64 people.

2 A discussion on the current nutritional value of Ayder hospital was held. Its objective was; to assess current dietary care, to improve the hospital menu, to introduce the system and the importance of dietetics in the clinical setting, because it is a new field in our country, how to integrate nutritional care with the other medical cares.

The main points of the discussion were; what looks like the current hospital menu including the ICU meal in terms of nutrition value: - Energy /calorie, Carbohydrate, Protein, Vitamins, and minerals. Accordingly, the nutritional value of our hospital’s menu/diet is very low as compared to the requirement. Another point was about the newly developed hospital menu whether it is complete in nutritional value or not, the source of energy, protein, vitamins, and minerals.

In addition to this, the texture, test, smell, and way of serving were discussed. Food safety and hygiene was also an issue which was discussed. The dietetic unit in collaboration with the hospital have planned to;

  • Have a very nice kitchen, well equipped with skilled manpower
  • Implement a good and balanced hospital menu
  • Implement HACCP (hazard analysis and critical control point)
  • Make the nutritional care one part of the other medical cares
  • Have well-trained kitchen staff. There was a good and constructive feedback from the participants and to be an input to work hard for the future. It was organized by theHospital dietetic unit and quality team .

3 Research proposal writing training was given for 20 senior physicians.  It was a 5 days training and provided by Dr. Dawit Wolday, a senior researcher and partner of the college of health sciences Oral and maxillofacial surgery.

4 Two interns, of the college of health sciences, Mekelle University have gone to Uganda Makerere University for one month of students’ exchange. The event is sponsored by GEmx. Four Ugandan medical students (two of them from Mbarara and Makarere University) have come each for one month stay at Ayder College of health sciences school of medicine in the months of May up to July 2018.

5 The monthly Ayder Enlightenment Forum, AEF of this week was held on the topic “The Power of Reading and Writing” by the guest speaker Mr. Muluworki Kidanemariam. Mr. Muluworki is a well-known teacher, economist, historian, voracious reader, and writer. Taking his lifetime passion for reading and writing into account, he shared his wisdom and experience for the audience on the power of reading and writing. Mr. Muluworki addressed the questions and recommendations raised by the participants. Finally, Chief Executive Director of the College of Health Sciences, Dr. Amanuel Haile appreciated, Mr. Muluworki for his good presentation and sharing his experience and offered the usual thank you certificate given to every presenter. He also appreciated the forum organizers team for their continuous work over the last three years. Mr. Muluworki was presented for the second time .

6 The department of pediatrics and child health, college of health sciences has undergone its thesis defense day on September 7, 2018. 8 final year residents who are the fourth batch of the department have successfully defended their thesis. Prof. Sileshi Luelseged, pediatrician, from Addis Ababa University, was the external evaluator and he was happy about the research work of all residents and gave constructive comments on the way forward.

7 A Research findings workshop on 'Kalazr' held in Axum hotel, Mekelle. The workshop was organized by Mekelle University College of health sciences, Tigray Regional Health Bureau and WHO. The aim of the workshop was to assess the problem and find solutions having strong relations among the health centers and all stakeholders. The finding research indicated that about 3.2 million people are at risk of Kalazar in the nation. 'Kalazr', sometimes is called poor disease since it is neglected diseases. Mr. Yohannes G/Haweriya from Tigray Regional Health Bureau, Dr. Tesfy G/Her and Mr. Shiwaye Belay, a researcher on 'Kalazar', from Mekelle University College of health sciences, presented their research study and briefed their experience for the participants. The participants have stressed their comment to work with all stakeholders together rather than doing separately.
