Mekelle University Yared Center of Ethiopian Philology and Manuscript Studies in collaboration with Ministry of culture and Tourism, Ethiopian National Archives and Library Agency and Tigray Culture and Tourism Bureau held the fifth national conference thematically focused on ‘Geez and Healing” from June 8 to 9, 2019 at Adi-Haki campus, MU. Different research papers related with Geez and healing like Geez and plants, plants for medicine, Geez and Magic, Geez and holly water, Geez and traditional medicine, Geez and folkloric medicine and other related issues have been entertained in the conference.
Keynote speaker of the National Conference, Professor Kindeya Gebrehiwot, President of Mekelle University said that though organizing conferences are not the end goal of Mekelle University, I appreciate the organizer of this National Conference as this conference will pave a way for further research and publication. Ethiopia is the land of untouched and uninvestigated area of knowledge said professor Kindeya, President of Mekelle University. because of this said professor, this conference should be taken as knocking door of knowledge, wisdom and international and national scientific ideas.
Participants from different religious institutions, colleges, universities, bureaus and other different stakeholders have attended the conference. Music and photo exhibitions, visual art shows and poem was also part of the conference. Productions which demonstrates the overall activities of the center like documentary film and photo gallery exhibitions have been showed as well. According to the founder and coordinator of St. Yared Center for Ethiopian Philology and Manuscript Studies, Dr. Hagos Abrha, the center is on progress and there are planes to scale up the center into institution, to start post graduate program in philology and linguistics, and to make the center an enhenced one for Geez language and to engage on serious publications and journals about manuscript studies.
