Mekelle University’s Department of Animal Rangeland and Wildlife Sciences organized a national conference on “Prospects of Wildlife Conservation and Ecotourism for Sustainable Development in Ethiopia” on May 13, 2017 at Axum Hotel, Mekelle.

Dr.Kidane Gidey, Dean of college of Dryland and Natural Resource Management, warmly welcomed the participants and said “ This workshop is expected to address opportunities and challenges of wildlife conservation and ecotourism development with particular references to the trends in wildlife policy and law and wild life conservation of the county.”

Dr. Kindeya G/hiwot, President of Mekelle University, on his opening speech said “  This workshop can play a great role in giving themes that eco the urgent call for conserving the diversity of life on our planet. And our university has given due weight for the value of conserving diversity life; for this reason the university is engaged in researching ,conserving and promoting the body of knowledge gained from the scientific research to the community of science and to the public at large and he added this workshop is a great important to create awareness among stakeholders on opportunities and challenges of wildlife conservation and Ecotourism management that will contribute to the sustainable development of our country.


On the workshop 16 oral presentations and 10 posters were presented and all the stake holders discussed on the issues raised and promised to think carefully about addressing Wildlife Conservation and Ecotourism development.

In the workshop, which is attended by scholars across the country, researchers from universities in Ethiopia, Animal Rangeland and Wildlife Sciences students and academic staff were also in attendance.

The workshop was closed by Dr. Abudulakadir kidr, vice president for academic of Mekelle University, who in his closing remark said all the presentations and documents presented in the workshop are valuable inputs for strategic plan preparation by the stakeholders and the department. And he thanked the organizers and participants of the workshop.
