As per the powers vested on it under the Ethiopian Higher Education Proclamation No. 650/2009-44/1/s, MU Board has approved the full professorship promotion of Dr. Kindeya Gebrehiwot, the current President of the University from the College of Dryland Agriculture and Natural Resources (CDANR), and Dr. Gidey Yirga from the Department of Biology, College of Natural and Computational Sciences (CNCS) in its meeting held on the 2nd of August, 2017.
While approving the promotion, the Board looked into the legislative requirements of four service years, 6 valued publications of which the two as principal author, evaluation of effective teaching, community services and participation in community affairs, and observed that both candidates scored more than the levels required.
Dr. Kindeya Gebrehiwot, who received his B.Sc. in Forestry Degree from Alemaya University in Ethiopia, did his M.Sc. Degree in Environmental Forestry in the University of Wales, UK. He studied his Ph.D. Degree in Forest Sciences and Ecology at the University of Goettingen, Germany. Before assuming his presidency, Dr. Kindeya has served at various positions in Mekelle University in addition to his visible academic and research engagements. He has served as a department head, Vice president for Research and Graduate Studies and an Academic Vice President. He is still working as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Drylands and the Ethiopian Journal of Natural Resources. He reviewed many international journals and supervised a number of MSc and PhD students. Dr. Kindeya has been recognized by many institutions for his contribution towards advancing research and education and his leadership skills. To mention some, he has won the Development Cooperation Prize (an international award for researchers) in 2004 and the African Leadership Award for Educational Leaders in 2015. Dr. Kindeya is a member various professional associations and networks including the Ethiopian Soil Science Association, Ethiopian Forestry Association, Rural Development Forestry Network in UK, Forest, trees and People Network in Sweden. Besides, he is serving as a board chairman and member of various associations, societies and academies.
Dr. Gidey Yirga, on the other hand, completed his Bachelor at MU in July, 2005 and was immediately employed as a Graduate Assistant at the Department of Biology. He also completed his Masters Degrees at MU with a very great distinction. Dr. Gidey Yirga did an exceptional double doctorate degree at Leiden University (The Netherlands) and Antwerp University (Belgium) within two years of time publishing six papers at Web of Science. He is the fastest ever to complete his PhD in the history of Leiden University (The Netherlands) and Antwerp University (Belgium). He is also a leading expert on successful human-hyena coexistence. Dr. Gidey Yirga won a Best Researcher Award in 2014 at MU’s College of Natural and Computational Sciences (CNCS). Dr. Gidey Yirga is currently doing his postdoctoral research in Germany with field work in Kenya funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the People Programme (Marie Curie Actions) of the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) under REA grant agreement n° 605728 (P.R.I.M.E. – Postdoctoral Researchers International Mobility Experience.
