Mekelle University Ayder Comprehensive Specialized Hospital held a press conference on how to prevent COVID-19 on March 20, 2020.The Hospital established a Task Force, and is also working in collaboration with the Tigray Health Bureau, to prevent the pandemic and deadly disease.

Dr. Reiye Essayas, Laparoscopic Surgeon and Ayder Chief Clinical Director, said that the Task Force is restlessly working on awaring the society; how the disease is transmitted and how should be prevented.

COVID 19 Prevention

Dr. Kibrom Gebreselassie, Internist, Pulmonologist and the MU Initiative Coordinator, said that following the occurrence of COVID-19 in Addis Ababa a week ago, Mekelle University is working on double responsibility. According to him, one is awaring the university community to prevent itself from the disease; and second, in collaboration with Tigray Health Bureau, creating awareness in Tigray community to prevent the pandemic disease. As to Dr. Kibrom, as it’s even recommended by WHO, washing hands with soap and water/using sanitizer and keeping the social distancing are among the principal ways of preventing COVID-19.

Likewise,Mussie Tesfay, Chief Administrative and Business Development Director, recommended that understanding the pandemic nature of COVID-19, so far 150 countries affected, people should properly practice the rules given by health professionals. He added that familes, friends, and relatives will not be let in to the hospital to visit patients for unlimited time as this would be helpful in preventing COVID-19.

On the press conference, it was made clear that when people feel any symptoms of Coronavirus, they must not come to hospital; rather give a call on 6244.
