This unit provides the available library materials in print and in electronic formats just in time based on user request and to serve the informational, educational and intellectual needs of MU’s community. This unit strives to offer fast, free and fair Library service as well as provide full access to Library materials for people with disabilities. Besides, unit also provides loan (short and long), reservation and document delivery services to users. Moreover, the unit provides fast and user friendly online service through which user check circulation information from their office and reserve, borrow as well as renew the material that they would like to use.

This section gives two kinds of loans: Short term loan –it is a loan which is given at circulation desk for the specified period of time or to be read for unspecified period of time within the library. Under this system, materials can never be taken out of the library for long term loan. These are books which are a few in number and very important, or stopped to be republished (Books not in print), or reserved by course instructors or the library. Whereas Long term loan is a loan which will be given at circulation desk for specified date or month.
The Circulation desk is located in front of the entrance gate of each branch University Library. Moreover, this section handles check in and checkout of all circulating resources in the library. In this case, circulating resources include the general collection, current interest books, reserves, and other.

Borrowing and Delivery 
Borrowing books from the Mekelle University Libraries collection is possible for: Students, Academic and Administrative Staff members of the Mekelle University. Besides, External users such Alumni, and collaborators and, Institutions that participate in an Inter-Library-Loan (ILL) Program with Mekelle University Libraries will benefit from MU’s Library loan Services. The library Circulation section and the course instructors may reserve reference books, journal articles, monographs, modules and teaching materials. Library reserve resource includes those sources which have small number of copies and yet needed for course reference as well as, those publications that hard to find in the market place.
All reserved resources are not meant for home loan unless & otherwise stated or exceptional arrangement is made for academic staff (that is used for the course which is offered in that specific semester) who came with approval letter signed by either department or College or branch library heads.

Reference and Information Service Unit
This unit is another key service area in the University Library System. This unit makes available adequate reference collections in print and in electronic format as well as makes reference collections well organized and easy to find. The reference and information service unit is also guiding and orienting users to get the information that they are looking for as well as equipping users with necessary skill that they require to access quality information.

Documentations and Periodicals Services Unit
This unit houses the current issues of magazines, newspaper, newsletter, pamphlets, etc. in all formats with comfortable seating, and quite reading space. Besides, this unit is also managing any documents published in any language and culture and governmental and non-governmental documents. Moreover, it collects and reserves senior essay, thesis and dissertation produced both in campus and outside the university through different means. This unit will have a Serial/periodical desk which is subscribed by the university.

Electronic and Digital Resource Services Unit
This unit provides access to digital collection, internet CD Room, and computer services. Currently, in our Library we have more than 70 online databases within which there are thousands of e-resources. Thus, you benefit from the online access to reviewed full text documents comprising journal articles, conference papers, annual reports, e-books and book chapters, monographs, technical information, field notes, thesis and dissertations. Key fields covered by these online databases include Animal Health (Veterinary) Human Health, Natural Science (Chemistry, Biology, Earth Science, Mathematics, and Physics), Engineering, Agriculture, Humanities and Social Sciences, Sport Science, Economics, Business, Public Policy, Law, Medicine, Information Technology, Computer Science, Bioinformatics and Library Sciences. In addition to this, it also facilitates information literacy and effective information utilization as well as self- learning.
Textbook Delivery Services Unit: - This unit manages and delivers textbooks for students and instructors every semester or annually depending on the nature of the programs and user demand. It issues and maintains systematically all the properties to potential users.
Reading Spaces - The library is working to prepare reading spaces for staff and discussion rooms for students.
