Department of Accounting and Finance

The Department Accounting & finance is part of the College of Business and Economics; it started its operation in the year 1991. Presently the department offers regular, extension, and summer in-service degree programs. It is also offering tailor made short-term training courses to meet the changing needs of the local community. In the process of continuous effort made by the department and an initiation of the university, the department is offering M. Sc. in Finance and Investment. A total of three course/modular teams and one research and community service team have been established at department level to realize the BPR endeavor.

MISSION

The mission of the Department of Accounting and Finance is to:

a)Promote the art of science of accounting and finance through acquisition, application and dissemination of knowledge to strengthen the business environment.

b)Commit to the ideals of education and development of the whole person by inspiring students to learn, lead and serve in a diverse and changing world.

c)Engage in socio-economic research that can support the development endeavors of the country and advance learning through the extension of knowledge frontiers and creative activities.

d)Enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the graduates through latest method of teaching and learning techniques.

e)Offer continuing education and training program linked with professional upgrading of field and academic staff for the country as a whole.

f)Create a knowledge-based society drawing strength from institutional capabilities

g)Serve as a higher institution of learning accountable to various stakeholders, including government and public and gives priority to effective participation in the global standard, exchange and application of knowledge.

OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT

a.GENERAL OBJECTIVES

The general objective of the department of Accounting and Finance is students to enter in to the profession and enhance professional practice in the field of accounting and finance in away that benefits the community, and address the effect of the changes in information technology have had in the accounting and finance field and opens up professional opportunities for those with competencies in both accounting and information systems.

b.SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES 

a)To enable students know the development of accounting principles, concepts, methods, conventions, procedures and rules from elementary stage to its present stage of development.

b)To equip the students with the necessary skills and abilities in the preparation of financial reports and interpretation.

c)To equip students with techniques of problem solving ability, planning, evaluating and controlling of activities for measuring profitability and efficiency.

d)To acquaint students with the principles and techniques of decision making in the major operational and strategic areas of the organization. 

e)To make students know the application of accounting principles, concepts, etc. in governmental units and not-for-profit organizations.

f)To enlighten students wills the concepts and principles of auditing, role duties and responsibilities, audits Auditors in general and the Audit practice in Ethiopia.

g)To provide training and constancy services.

h)To conduct research that will help in survey social problems.

These aims are achieved through a range of courses offered in a variety of formats to students from a diversity of backgrounds. These courses interact closely with the professions, with government and community organizations and, through innovative, relevant and continuing education, anticipate and meet the needs of the department's various clients and stakeholders.
