Mekelle University is one of the young establishments of higher learning institutions in Ethiopia with less than two decades since its foundation under the famous Momona tree (Faidherbia albida) which we are now to name the journal: Momona Ethiopia Journal of Science (MEJS). In the last few years the university has grown tremendously in: program diversity, depth and breadth of research, international collaborations, and overall institutional capacity in terms of human and material resources to undertake research. The inertia to undertake research in various fields of science is increasing as the number of people with their second and terminal degrees and the diversity in fields of specialization increase.
The growth in depth and breadth of both teaching and research is enabling the university to be a center of excellence in research. Many programs have already initiated teaching at the graduate level (for example: agriculture, applied geology) and the basic sciences (biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics) will start teaching at graduate level in the near future. The initiation of post graduate education in various disciplines is expected to increase the research outputs by many folds as the programs are basically research based. Thus, the establishment of a multidisciplinary journal devoted to disseminate knowledge gained in the different fields of science has many functions: encourage researchers to develop the habit of publishing, encourage researchers to carryout further research and produce competent researchers, and create a forum for scientific contribution to the country. The establishment of the Science Journal at Mekelle University will enable the university to create a publication and communication forum among scientists within the country and the outside world.
MEJS Volume I
Publication of research results and exchange of information is essential to the growth of any discipline. There are several International and National journals available for scientists to publish their research results. Among them some are highly specialized and dedicated to a particular profession or discipline. MEJS tries to provide platform for scientists related to Natural and Computational Sciences in general and Earth Scientists, Physicists, Biologists, Chemists and Mathematicians in particular and covers all aspects from basic to applied nature. Contrary to the paper journal, MEJS is launched as an EJOURNAL primarily with the desire to expand its base to more and more countries around the world and serve the international scientific community by providing a low cost journal. The idea of ejournal is in tune with the recent advances made in the electronic publishing sector which has resulted in the publication thousands of journals electronically globally and available on the World Wide Web (WWW). This makes the present initiative possible and provides a suitable mechanism for widespread dissemination of information. MEJS first volume is published in printed copy and here we have provided the PDF copy of the journal for download.
