Mekelle University College of Health Sciences (MU-CHS) has honoured Dr Rahel Nardos of the University of Minnesota with a Certificate of Appreciation for almost a decade of transformative support to women’s health in Tigray. At the ceremony, Chief Executive Director Dr Kibrom Gebreselassie thanked her for “consistent, worthy support—always arriving when it is needed most.” Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Dr Yitbarek Tadesse added, “She has always been there when we need help, and we look forward to deepening this partnership for years to come.”

Over the years Dr Rahel Nardos has travelled to Tigray to lead urogynecology surgical campaigns at Ayder Comprehensive Specialized Hospital and the Mekelle Hamlin Fistula Center, restoring health and dignity to hundreds of women. She has underpinned the department’s urogynecology fellowship by mentoring trainees and supplying vital learning resources, and her donations of equipment and supplies—worth hundreds of thousands of dollars—have filled critical gaps during periods of acute shortage. By funding transport and allowances, she has also enabled residents and senior obstetrician-gynecologists to deliver emergency surgery in remote communities, while financing initiatives that make Cesarean deliveries safer across the region.

Speaking at the event, Obstetrician-Gynecologist Dr Hale Teka praised her “spirit of global solidarity for women,” noting that “by virtue of her commitment she is able to touch women in the neglected corners of the world.” Chief Administrative and Business Development Director Dr Haileselassie Berhe called her “a friend and sister of Ayder” and expressed hope that the bond will continue to grow.
As a personal tribute, MU-CHS presented Dr Nardos with an epoxy-framed portrait bearing her own words: “But my biggest vision is making sure that women and girls have the capacity to realize their full potential, no matter where they live or what the circumstances of their births are.”
MU-CHS also acknowledged the organizations that have rallied behind Dr Rahel Nardos’s humanitarian efforts—Global Perm NW, the Worldwide Fistula Fund, and the University of Minnesota’s Center for Global Health and Social Responsibility—whose support has amplified her impact.
