
Mekelle University to Host International AI Conference on Sustainable Development
Mekelle University will host its first international conference on “Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development in Africa (AI4SD)” on April 27–28, 2026 in Mekelle University, Mekelle, Ethiopia.

During a media briefing, Dr. Eyasu Yazew Vice President for Research and Community Engagement, highlighted the university’s readiness and emphasized the role of artificial intelligence in addressing key challenges in agriculture, education, healthcare, socio-economic development, and governance.

Dr. Assefa Tesfay, Conference Chair, presented the conference program and expected outcomes.
The conference will feature 32 selected scientific research papers and bring together more than 200 participants from across the globe. It also aims to strengthen data security, advance AI governance, and support evidence-based policymaking.
The university reaffirmed its commitment to promoting ethical and responsible use of AI for sustainable development.
