The demand for ICT services, which started with ADSL-modem + Dial-up service and very few office desktops and machines and two staffs in 2002, has increased very astoundingly! We are at a stage where ICT is the heart of almost all businesses run by the university, including the core businesses like Teaching-Learning, Research, and community services. Hence, the ICT center has to be managed as to meet the astounding demand of the large user-population we have.
To transform the practices and procedures of the university into a modern and fully digitized one and to live up to the university communities’ expectation, the ICT-Directorate has been moving forward. It has been strategically working so hard in two major fronts, namely ICT- Infrastructure development and Automation of the traditional work flows and practices of the Mekelle University during the last 5 years.
In the Infrastructure Development front, 6 campuses are connected through direct fiber optics connection. The ICT-Directorate has successfully managed to build the state-of-the-art Tier-III. The Data center is a specialized facility for housing a large number of facilities, IP devices, IT devices and communication links. Our datacenter comprises the-state-of-the-art facilities and computing devices designed and installed in a way as to ensure very high reliability, scalability, 24/7 availability. Tier III datacenter is composed of multiple active power and cooling distribution paths, but only one path is active at a time, has redundant components, and is concurrently maintainable, providing 99.982% availability.
In the Automation front, the ICT-Directorate of Mekelle University, along with the process owners (Registrar, Finance, Procurement, Research, HRM, and Facility offices) and the developing company), has played very immense role in transforming the traditional work-flows and practices into user-friendly and reliable automated practices. Along with the university community, our directorate has tried its level best to automate such process as Student Life Cycle Management System, Procurement Management System, Property Management System, Financial Management System, eHRM, eFleet, and Research Management System. The automation project has brought a paradigm shift in the university work-flows and practices. In addition our directorate office has already implemented digital library, e-Library, eLearning, and ICT e-Ticket services at University level.
